Visual Dare #11: Mystique

TIME FOR ANOTHER VISUAL DARE!

Below is this week's Visual Dare! Photo courtesy of Sara Kjelleren

Use this photo in one of two ways:

     * incorporate it into your current Work In Progress - literally, or figuratively
     * use it as a 100 word flash fiction to get the brain going in a different creative direction.

Post your flash fiction, using the link tool below! (Those who don't have a blog may post their work via Sweet Banana Ink.)

Happy writing!

  1. First attempt at a visual dare and I could not stop writing, kept running out of room on my notepad :)

    2. Lovely work!! I think someone needs to work on possibly expanding that one into a longer story - it reads like an exotic fairy tale or parable.

    5. I think I will try working on it, its the longest piece I have written in a while and was surprised how it kept flowing. Unfortunately no social media for me but thank you for the thought!

  2. Return to Sender

You recognise me now. I see you start away in terror as you would from a poisonous snake as I make my way graciously to greet you.

You know that no woman of your country would have green eyes and you know instantly who I am. It strikes fear into you.

Your past in London could be revealed to your parents, your countrymen. But they don't know the half, do they, Ahmed ? The baby ? The payments ? The blackmail ? And I'm here .

    1. What's this Twitter-nonsense about you not doing flash fiction well??? This is great - so sharp, poignant, brutal. So many emotions twined into this one little burst of fiction. LOVE THIS.

Glad to see you back! :D

    2. So good to be home, thanks Angela .. but I really am going to be busy with contracts, honestly. Flash, um, well, will have to be really excellent prompts like this before I take a break to post

  3. The photo shoot started badly. The photographer, prowling panther-like, circled his prey.

“I can’t imagine why the agency sent you. Your body is wrong. The clothes would be better on a clothes hanger.”

All said in a rising crescendo of horror, the faux French accent gone.

“But your eyes might work.” The emphasis was on “might”.

His assistant stepped forward, proffering Kashmiri scarves. Artfully arranged, the scarves left only my eyes visible.

A test shot. I waited for the kill.

“A mystical allure,” purred the photographer, suddenly a friendly feline. I was now his muse. “La mystique. C’est magnifique.”

    1. Great spin on the prompt!! Love this. So much tension woven into the moment, and with such sparing and carefully placed adjectives. Well done!!

  4. Oh, this was also my first Visual Dare. I did go over the 100 words... but I wanted to do the photo some justice!

Anyways, you can read it here: http://jdwenzel.com/visual-dare-mystique/

    1. You did do the photo every bit of justice!! I commented on your blog yesterday --- did it not go through! Very impressive, job well done! Maybe next time the 100 word limit will be a bit easier. :)

    2. It did go through, I tweeted you, but I'll re-explain. My blog is very new and I was still implementing plugins and other little things and I had forgotten to enable the Disqus comment plugin. Well when I finally did enable it the system that SUPPOSEDLY imports/syncs comments from the old wordpress to the new Disqus comments decided it didn't feel like working. I went through all of the "fixes" I could find to no avail... so I gave up. lol.

I tweeted you my replies to your comments, though.

I tend to be long winded, I'm afraid. I'll aim for the 100 words next week for sure... but no promises lol.

Also, I love the visual dare concept. It was a very fun experience for me. I've not done a lot of writing workshops or creative prompts and I wanted to rectify that.
